Building a Little App for Love: How Our LDR Inspired a Next.js Project
The Story Behind the Idea
This idea started as something small — a note between me and my woman, Haset.
She’s in Bahirdar University, and I’m here in Addis Ababa. We’ve known each other for almost our entire lives, but for the past months, distance has been part of our story. It’s not easy. Still, every call, every shared laugh, every plan we make keeps me grounded and hopeful. She’s truly one of the best gifts God gave me — my reason to keep pushing forward.
One day, she mentioned that we should start writing down our plans — maybe on paper, maybe just on our phones. But as a developer, something clicked in me.
What if I build something simple, just for us? Something that can live online, sync instantly, and grow with our story?
And that’s how this little Next.js project was born.
Turning a Simple Idea Into an App
I didn’t want to overcomplicate it. The idea is to create a shared digital space — a place where we can write notes, share dreams, track plans, and see them come to life together. Not like a chat app, but more like a living notebook for two.
The first version will just be for us.
A private release — something personal, something meaningful. Once it feels right and stable, maybe I’ll polish it and release it publicly. Who knows? Maybe other couples in long-distance relationships will find it useful too.
For now, though, I’m focusing on making it ours.
Building It with Love (and Next.js)
Technically, I’m using Next.js for the frontend — it’s fast, flexible, and perfect for building something I can iterate on quickly. I want to keep it clean and minimal, so we can focus on the content and emotion, not the UI.
Later, I might add syncing features, authentication, and some personalization — maybe even a shared “timeline” where we can mark important moments.
But I’m not rushing it. I want every line of code to reflect the purpose behind it — love, connection, and hope for what’s next.
Looking Ahead
We’re counting down the months — three more, and we’ll finally be together again. This project is part of that journey — a symbol of how technology can turn distance into something a little more bearable.
If you’re in a long-distance relationship too, maybe this story reminds you that love and creativity can build bridges — even digital ones.
For now, it’s just a small app made with a big heart. But like us, it’s growing every day.
