How a Command Prompt Sparked My Journey Into Tech
I’ve always believed that the best stories start by accident — and mine definitely did.
Back when I was a teenager, I wasn’t thinking about code, software, or tech careers. I was just a kid who loved computer games. My cousin and I used to trade games with other people — we’d go around with flash drives, swapping and sharing whatever new games we could find. It was fun, simple, and just part of our routine.
One day, while we were at a guy’s house trading games, I noticed something unusual. He was typing something on his computer — a black screen filled with white text. All I could see was “Command Prompt.” I had no idea what he was doing, but that moment stuck with me. I didn’t understand it, yet I was instantly fascinated.
The First Spark
When I got home, I opened my brother’s laptop and launched Command Prompt. I didn’t know what I was doing — I just started typing random things. Every time I pressed Enter, the screen replied:
'xxx' is not recognized as an internal or external command.
But under one of those messages, I noticed something: “Type HELP for more information.”
So, I did.
That one simple line changed everything for me.
I tried every command I could find, just to see what would happen. I didn’t have internet tutorials or any real guidance — just curiosity and trial-and-error. Eventually, I discovered something called Batch scripting, which lets you write scripts for Command Prompt.
It might sound funny now, but I guess you could say my first programming language was .bat. And even though it’s not officially counted as one, it was the door that opened everything for me.
My First Project Ever
I remember building my first “program” using Batch — it was a simple menu-based tool that let users open useful built-in Windows apps like Notepad, Calculator, and Command Prompt, with short descriptions about what they do.
I presented it in high school, and people were surprisingly impressed. For me, it wasn’t even about showing off — I was just proud that something I typed could actually do something.
That’s the moment I realized: this is what I want to do. I wanted to build things — tools, apps, systems — that people could use and enjoy.
The Journey Back
After high school, life took a few detours. I spent a few years away from tech — living what I’d call a “wasted life” phase — disconnected from that spark I once had. But that curiosity never really died.
Eventually, I found my way back.
I started again from scratch — this time with web development. I learned JavaScript, Node.js, and Python step by step, exploring how modern software actually gets built. What started as a small rediscovery turned into a passion that consumed me again — but this time, with focus and purpose.
Building My Craft
Since then, I’ve built everything from Telegram mini-apps and e-commerce dashboards to mobile apps with Flutter and backend APIs with FastAPI and Node.js. Each project has been another lesson, another level up from the kid who once typed nonsense in Command Prompt just to see what would happen.
I even had the chance to join A2SV (Africa to Silicon Valley) as a Mobile App Developer, where I worked with other brilliant developers to build scalable, high-quality applications and learned what it means to work on professional-grade systems.
Looking Ahead
When I think back to that day — standing in a stranger’s house, watching someone type on a black screen — I realize that was the start of everything. A single spark of curiosity led me here: building apps, solving problems, and helping shape the digital world in my own way.
My journey hasn’t been straight, but it’s been real — full of pauses, comebacks, and small victories. And as I keep learning and creating, I’m reminded of one simple truth:
All it takes is one moment of curiosity to change your life forever.
